Chinese Broccoli (Gai lan) Recipe

What does one do when they get a chinese broccoli plant from China in their garden? One begins by simply cutting the stems and all of the branches. Once done this is followed by cleaning the roots of the leaves and stems before the leaves are used for another meal. The roots are also used in some herbal teas. When growing them it needs to be cut off because the plants can grow up to a height of 20 feet. To keep them fresh you should leave them uncovered until after harvest. This does not mean that chinese broccoli will never rot! If the stems are not cut or not being touched. It may go brownish on the bottom of the stem! Another way to deal with your chinese broccoli plant is to buy a container made specifically for chinese broccoli leaves. These containers will allow you to have the chinese broccoli leaves without having to worry about what happens if the seeds fall out! If you wish to make more use out of your chinese broccoli plant you can place it in an area where it will be exposed to lots of sunlight and some sun blocks.

How to Cook Chinese Broccoli?

This recipe is easy to cook. To start you will need to preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. After preheating the oven, wash the vegetables and cut them into large chunks. Take these chunks right out of the container and add them to a large pot of water. Add salt to the water. In addition to that you will need some oil for the vegetables to cover them all. Next you will want to put two cups of rice into the pan of water and then add chinese broccoli leaves. You would be able to serve them in bowls such as this dish if the greens take off of their leaves after they are cooked. Put the green noodles inside of the big container. Then start cooking the chinese broccoli together with other ingredients you will find on the list. Make sure the vegetables are heated thoroughly, then let rest until the noodles are ready! Stir the veggies a few times until everything is cooked and serve with the rice!

Method To Cook Chinese Broccoli, Gan Lan (chinese broccoli leaf):

If you prefer to chop the chinese broccoli stems, you can peel the stems and leave them whole. However this gives the stems a lot of crunch and color. Also the leaves usually end up looking like a mess when not eaten! To save your time and money you can purchase pre-cut chinese broccoli flowers and cut them yourself. This saves quite a few minutes and it makes it much easier to make the final product look better! Remember to chop the vegetables carefully in order to avoid getting any broken pieces of broccoli. I was able to get away with using a knife and fork only once to chop the leaves and stems. All you need to be careful of is how much you chop off each of your broccoli. Even though sliced carrots or spaghetti squash will not be very good substitutes for broccoli. They will most likely stick to whatever food they were cooked in and will not last long. To make things even worse if they were cooked in too much oil you will get a really greasy texture. For me the best result was using a sharp vegetable knife to slice up my leaves. Doing all of this at the same time helps get rid of any excess oil. Do not under any circumstances, touch any part of the chinese broccoli leaves! That's not good for its flavor! After the chinese broccoli is cooked you can remove them from their bags and enjoy! My mother did not have a problem with this so she added spinach, kale, cabbage, mushrooms and green beans. She has done this several times without the rice. Now we need to prepare the dishes right! Let's see our favorite sauce prepared!
